Torquay Academy Β· Torquay, South West
As a result of a promotion we have a position for a Leader
of English to join us from September 2026. Whilst we appreciate the closing
date is fast approaching we welcome potential candidates to visit the school to
find out more before the interview date (22nd May). We encourage applications
from teachers at all stages of their career.
Due to the broad range of
skills within our existing team, we are open to shaping this role around the
strengths and passions of the applicants who are interested in joining us. What is most important to us is identifying
the right candidate who is ready to take the next stage in their leadership
journey. For example, you may be
particularly interested in shaping the curriculum of a key stage, developing
literacy across the school, or driving achievement of the disadvantaged. You might have a keen interest in fostering
the talents of those with the highest achievements within English, or a desire
to work with those who need support in achieving a pass grade. Perhaps coaching and developing the teaching
and learning of other teachers is an area you would like a role in
leading. If invited to interview, you
will be given the opportunity to talk about what drives and motivates you as a
teacher of English, and the direction you would like to take your career. We believe strongly in investing in the
development of our leaders, and three of our previous English teachers are now
headteachers of their own schools in Devon.
Underpinning the success of
our school is a well developed academic curriculum which our teachers are
highly invested in and are passionate about delivering. A collaborative
approach to centralised planning has meant that our teachers have the best of
both worlds - the ability to shape and develop a curriculum they believe in and
outstanding resources they can shape to suit their individual classes. We
believe that all children, regardless of background and past school experience,
are capable of understanding and learning the top-grade concepts, ideas, and
theories needed to transform them into capable and knowledgeable critics and
readers.
In our department, you will
be supported in your development both as a teacher and as a subject specialist.
You will be responsible for
the expert delivery of a carefully sequenced curriculum and, because resources
are centrally produced, given the time and space to become a master of your
craft and your subject.
We believe students of all
backgrounds achieve most highly when the knowledge and concepts required to
succeed are made explicit to them, and revisited throughout their journey
across the key stages. We believe that strong and well structured modelling of
analysis and critical vocabulary enables independence and have been excited by
the number of students who choose to go on to study our subjects at A Level and
beyond. If you would like to work in a department which
