About the role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and reflective teacher to teach Religious Education and further develop the already strong practice for our keen and highly motivated pupils, who demonstrate a genuine curiosity about beliefs, values and the wider world. Our vision for RE is both rigorous and inspiring β€”a curriculum that challenges pupils academically while encouraging deep thinking about ethical, philosophical and cultural issues. We want our curriculum to be intellectually demanding while also fostering curiosity, empathy and respect for diversity. Pupils show strong interest in exploring issues around faith, morality, identity and society. There are excellent opportunities to further enrich the curriculum through discussion, debate, cultural experiences and wider SMSC development. We teach AQA Religious studies at GCSE and OCR Religious Studies at A Level and results are improving - last year at GCSE nearly 40% of pupils achieved a 7 and above and A Level was an ALPS 5. Numbers have increased at GCSE and the subject is growing in popularity. All Key Stage 3 pupils follow a core RE curriculum and pupils enjoy the subject - there is scope to develop the curriculum outside the classroom in line with our commitment to character education. The successful candidate will also teach some Sociology and there may also be some Psychology, Personal Development (PSHE) or EPQ commitment depending on experience. We encourage you to discuss this with us if you are shortlisted or to phone and discuss in advance. As a teacher at Wanstead High, you will work collaboratively with Heads of Year, the Senior Leadership Team, SENDCo and Headteacher to promote high standards of behaviour, engagement and inclusion. You will contribute to the School Development Plan and help embed a culture of high challenge and low threat , where pupils feel safe to express ideas and develop their own informed viewpoints. As we develop our character curriculum, there is a wider role to play in contributing to this as well as the school’s objective of meeting the Rights Respecting Award. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality teaching and learning, ensuring equity of opportunity and strong progress for all learners. At Wanstead, staff are empowered to develop their practice, and you will be supported in making RE engaging, relevant and accessible to every pupil , helping them to become thoughtful, respectful and informed members of society.
