Nower Hill High School Β· Pinner, London
We are seeking a dedicated and inspiring
Head of Classics to join our thriving faculty. Prior leadership experience is
not essential, but we are seeking an experienced practitioner with excellent
pedagogical knowledge, superb communication skills, and a firm commitment to
widening access to classical subjects for students of all backgrounds and
abilities. The ability to teach Classics and Latin at KS3-4 is essential and at
KS5 highly desirable; any experience of teaching Oracy would be an additional
advantage. You must have experience of teaching in a UK secondary school.
The Classics Department at Nower Hill is a
very special place to teach. It comprises five specialist Classics teachers and
offers all classical subjects, which is incredibly rare in the state sector.
All Year 7 and Year 8 students study our homemade Latin, Classics and Oracy
course. We use the Cambridge Latin Course all the way through into GCSE
alongside teaching the other elements of the Eduqas syllabus. Classical
Civilisation and Ancient History are both offered at GCSE. Students may
continue with Latin and Classical Civilisation at A-Level. We are very proud to
be able to offer Classical Greek as an extracurricular option from Year 7
onwards. We are one of only a very few state schools in the country offering
Classical Greek in the sixth form.
In addition to Greek, there is a thriving
Classics Club, which is run by Year 12 and Year 13 students and we regularly
organise study days and trips to destinations both at home and abroad. Our
biannual trip to Italy or Greece is the highlight of many studentsβ school
experience and anticipated with great excitement!
As a department, we constantly strive to
improve our practice and benefit from a strong whole-school culture of
professional development and a dynamic, βcan-doβ attitude. You will be joining
a team of experienced, supportive colleagues with deep and extensive subject
knowledge, who constantly seek to learn from each other and plan
collaboratively as much as possible. In addition, we host 1-2 PGCE trainee
teachers each year.
This is an
excellent opportunity for a high calibre, enthusiastic and creative teacher to
join our outstanding Faculty of Linguistic and Cultural Studies (FLACS). This
post is suitable for both experienced teachers as well as those who may be
returning to the profession after a break.
