Purpose of the Role To support the delivery of practical construction sessions and vocational learning for students with social, emotional and mental health needs. The Construction Assistant will help create a safe, engaging, and supportive environment where pupils can develop practical skills, confidence, and employability through construction-based learning. Key Responsibilities Support the Construction Tutor in planning, preparing, and delivering construction workshops aligned with the curriculum. Supervise and guide students during practical sessions, ensuring safe and responsible use of tools, materials, and equipment. Prepare resources and maintain the workshop area to high standards of cleanliness, safety, and organisation. Assist in setting up and dismantling construction projects and demonstrations. Monitor student progress and provide feedback that supports learning and personal development. Promote positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and resilience in line with the schoolβs behaviour and wellbeing policies. Support individual students or small groups with differentiated instruction and emotional support. Help manage stock levels, organise supplies, and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. Participate in school training, meetings, and safeguarding procedures as required. Contribute to a team ethos focused on respect, inclusion, and achievement for every pupil. Person Specification Essential: Understanding of or empathy for the needs of young people with SEMH or additional learning needs. Strong practical skills and ability to demonstrate safe working practices. Good communication and teamwork skills. Willingness to undertake training and follow safeguarding procedures. Desirable: Experience working in an educational or youth setting. Experience in a trade or construction-related environment (e.g. joinery, brickwork, painting and decorating). Relevant qualifications (e.g. Level 2/3 in Construction or related field, or equivalent experience). First Aid or Health and Safety certification.
