About the role

River Academy is seeking a Teacher of Geography to join our growing team. This is an opportunity to deliver high-quality teaching within a supportive and ambitious environment. The role focuses on securing strong progress and attainment for all students through consistently effective teaching, clear curriculum delivery and a commitment to inclusive practice. River Academy opened in September 2024 with 180 students and seven students in its resource base. From September 2026, student numbers will increase to 541 as the school welcomes its next cohort of Year 7 students. The school is currently heavily oversubscribed, with waiting lists in all year groups, River Academy is known for its high expectations and high levels of progress. Last year, in NGRT reading tests, Year 7 progressed from the 53rd percental to the 72nd percentile across the year. Similarly, 44 students in Year 7 achieved awards in the UK Junior Maths Challenge, which is way above the statistical expectation. On weekly basis River Academy is first placed in the entire country for Sparx Maths and Sparx Reader completion rates demonstrating a whole school commitment to ensure no learner falls behind. You will plan and deliver engaging Geography lessons, contribute to curriculum development and play a key role as a form tutor, supporting students’ academic and personal development. Key Responsibilities Plan and deliver effective Geography lessons in line with Trust and school frameworks Motivate and inspire students to achieve high academic standards and sustained engagement Use assessment effectively to inform planning, close gaps and support student progress Maintain high standards of behaviour for learning in line with Trust expectations Act as a form tutor and contribute to pastoral care, wellbeing and inclusion Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents and external partners to support outcomes Contribute to curriculum enrichment, including trips and wider learning opportunities Uphold safeguarding, health and safety, and all Trust policies consistently The Ideal Candidate Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with a relevant degree Strong subject knowledge in Geography and a commitment to high-quality teaching Ability to deliver engaging lessons and adapt teaching to meet diverse needs Effective behaviour management and a commitment to positive student relationships Strong communication and organisational skills Commitment to inclusion, safeguarding and supporting all students to succeed Willingness to contribute to the wider life of the school, including enrichment activities About the School River Academy is a purpose-built secondary school serving the growing need for school places in the Reading area.
