Whitby School · Whitby, Yorkshire and the Humber
This role is perfect for ECTs eager to kick‑start their careers, or for experienced teachers looking for a new opportunity.
The English Department Our vibrant English Department is led by our Head of English and Second in Department, supported by a dynamic team of six teachers who bring a wealth of experience through a mix of full-time, part-time, and wider whole-school roles. The department is a cohesive, mutually supportive and highly committed team. It generates many of its own resources, with all programmes of study being centrally planned. The department has access to a wide range of technology to aid teaching and learning provision. Pupils and sixth form students follow a common skills-driven scheme of work, which has differentiated activities and resources built in; formative assessment and upward differentiation are used to raise attainment. Key Stage 3 At key stage 3, students engage with poetry, prose, drama and non-fiction texts. We are particularly keen to develop links to prior (KS2) learning and to ensure that KS3 is a rich, varied, engaging curriculum. GCSE At Key Stage 4, pupils cover a range of challenging texts, such as ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens, ‘Macbeth’ by William Shakespeare, ‘An Inspector Calls’ by JB Priestley and a collection of war and conflict poetry. The department enters pupils for AQA English Language and English Literature GCSE. A-Level At A-level, the department currently offers both English Literature and English Language and uses EDEXCEL. English Language students consider the impact of gender, age, technology and geography upon our language. Some of our alumni have used their English Language skills to progress into journalism careers with Sky and Channel 4. From Dracula to The Handmaid’s Tale, A-level literature is about amazing novels, poems and plays. Our students are often creative writers, as well as enthusiastic readers and participate in a range of literary competitions. Many students have progressed on to study at top universities. Our Opportunity We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate specialist subject English Teacher to join our team. You will teach both English Language and English Literature to our pupils. Dependent on experience, this role will involve teaching Key Stages 3 and 4, with the potential to teach A-level. This is more than a teaching role — it is an opportunity to shape the future of Whitby. By supporting young people to develop strong English skills they will use every day, you will help them build confidence, unlock opportunities, and thrive within their community and beyond.
